By-Law Enforcement

The Town is responsible for enforcing by-laws set in place by the town municipal governement.

Community Planning & Development

The Community Planning and Development Department is responsible for facilitating land development within Georgetown. The Planning and Development Committee strives to manage growth efficiently, and with the intention of providing the highest quality of life for both present and future residents, business operators and visitors alike.

The components involved in this process include planning, development control, building and fire inspection and subdivision.

Any additional questions regarding permits, development, and other community planning issues, do not hesitate to contact the town office. Recreation

Georgetown has activities for everyone. If you are into sports, check out the Three Rivers Sportsplex, tennis courts, baseball or softball fields. Have a family with active kids? Why not go to one of the playgrounds around town or go for a walk or bike ride on the Confederation Trail. Still not your thing? There is always flyfishing at local piers, golf, camping at Brudenell Provincial Park, horseback riding, or boating!

Snow Removal

Georgetown Public Works Department is the entitiy responsible for clearing roads after snow storms. Please remember to exercise caution and patience as removal activities take place during the winter season.  Inquiries please call 902-652-2924.

Public Works would like to remind residents and inform tourists that winter parking regulations extend from December 1st to April 15th each year and prohibit vehicles being left at the roadside through the night. Removal of vehicles from streets, parkinglots and sidewalks greatly assists with providing effective snow removal services. Cars that are not moved may be subject to fines or towing at the owner's expense.

Taxes

Municipal Tax rates for 2007 have been set at $.85 per $100 of assessment for residential properties and $1.70 per $100 of commercial assessment for commercial and business occupancy
properties.

There is a Residential Waste Collection levy of $193.00 per dwelling unit.

Waste Management

The Town belongs to the Provincial Waste Watch Program, in which residents sort and separate their household waste.The Town participates with the Provincial Clean Up Weeks in May and November.

Water & Sewer

A piped sewerage system with lift stations and lagoon treatment system operates at 75% capacity, and allows ample room for residential and commercial expansion in the Town.  Most of the Town is serviced by Municipal Water System.

Georgetown Cap Site

The Community Access Program (CAP) has been designed and implemented by Industry Canada across Canada to provide Canadians with an opportunity to have affordable, public access to the Internet and its various technologies.

With support from CAP and its provincial and territorial partners, Community Access Sites have been set up in libraries, schools and community centres in rural and remote communities throughout Canada. In the spring of 1998, Georgetown CAP was officially opened for business, and since that time has grown in size and popularity. Currently the Cap Site operates full time during summer season.  The rest of the year the site is open only during library hours.

Canada Post

The Town of Georgetown has full postal services, including rural delivery to the Royalty and Burnt Point are provided.

The post office is conveniently located in the center of town.

Police Protection

Police services are provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, located in Brudenell, under the Provincial Policing contract.  Phone 911.

Health and Social Services

The province owns and maintains three senior citizens complexes, comprised of a total of 16 units. Each building has a large common room area for group activities, along with ample parking and quiet accommodations.

Southern Kings Health provides a wide range of health and social services with facilities in nearby Montague.
Georgetown Housing Authority is engaged with social housing needs.

Streets

Streets are a shared responsibility between the Town and the Province.  Approximately 3.2 km of 14.4 km has been designated as Provincial Highway, and is maintained by the Department of Transportation and Public Works. The remaining 11.2 km is maintained by the Town.

Harbour

The Queens Wharf:
Owned by the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Administered by the Georgetown Harbour Authority and offers the following services; fresh water, electricity (120volt), unloading hoist, slip area and garbage disposal.

Georgetown Marine Terminal: Administered by the Canadian Coast Guard Harbours and Ports Directorate.

Services include:

  • fresh water
  • supplies
  • minor repairs
  • oil discharge
  • stevedoring
  • electricity
  • harbor master
  • wharfing

    Icebreaker support is available during the winter months.  The approach channel to the Terminal has no width restrictions; and has a depth of 10.97 meters.  Pilotage is available but not compulsory.

    The terminal is divided into four berthage sections:
  • Section 1: Length 153m depth 8.0m
  • Section 2: Length 42m depth 8.0m
  • Section 3: Length 164m depth 8.0m
  • Section 4: Length 70m depth 3.0 to 6.0m
